The Breakfast of Champions

Meal time with Maeve occasionally leaves me mystified.
She's far less picky than the toddler but isn't as capable in the chewing/not gagging department of eating.
Today for breakfast she ate:
cheerios
tiny apple pieces
turkey
cheese
She eats a lot of veggies and yogurt and toast; but now that she's on her weight gain diet I've added in whole milk, mac and cheese, pudding (calcium--right?) and mini hot dog niblets *shudder.*
So what I'm writing to say is....
Any ideas out there for a baby trying to bulk up?
Cause I'm out =)

Sounds like you got it under control!! My Princess was the same way with the lower weight thing! She is still a lightweight but tall! Somedays she eats well, others not so much. I just let her do her thing. She is healthy and that's all that counts.
As long as Miss M IS eating and is healthy I wouldn't worry so much about the weight. Remember she is more mobile now-so she is burning more calories.
I would just continue what you are doing. Over her options and she'll eat when she's hungry.
No need for worries!!

My doctors put my son on the same weight gain diet. I found Avocados to be a big help.

AVOCADO!!!!! So, so, so good for you and full of really good fats. Norah loves them, her little eyes light up as soon as she sees me cutting one up : )

I'm not even sure how I came across your blog, but I read it often (and enjoy). I am a mom to 3 little ones. My middle little girl was, well, little too. Actually, she still is small but healthy. Our doctor told us to try mixing Carnation instant breakfast into her whole milk to add extra calories and nutrients. It does add extra sugar too, but it did get her to drink more milk. Your girls are precious.

I thought of one more.....oatmeal w/ mashed banana. I just grind up some regular rolled oats in my food processor (I do this ahead of time and store a bunch in a tupperware). Then I micro 1/4 oats w/ 1/2 cup milk. Then I mash half a banana into it. It's a good, filling breakfast.

you could try beans like black or pink (my favorites). they're very high in protein and super healthy. canned are good and nice and soft for them to chew. when i do canned i just rinse off the stuff on them and both of my boys love them. the cheaper option is dried which isn't hard to do either, just takes a little time.

avocado... If she won't eat it dip some baby goldfish or bread in it. My three year old is picky but will eat avocado on some goldfish or cheese crackers.

My oldest was in need of extra weight and fat (for brain growth) as a baby. I used to make her silver dollar pancakes using whole wheat flour and would add pureed veggies to the batter. Believe it or not, the pea ones were here favorites, and while tinted green, they didn't taste like peas. Her doc wanted her to eat extra milk fats, like butter, so that is how she ate them. Easy to hold, suck on and eat for a little one.

Just to let you know, with the oatmeal/banana mixture ~ make sure to give her some apple juice or something because that'll cause some serious blockage. I've had experience.... not fun TRUST ME!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh! totally been there....actually even though Sam's eating good- he is still picky and small for his age....so I am always trying to give him high calorie/protein food- not so great for my diet plan though:) ha ha!

Sounds like you are well on your way.....I think I read somewhere that the peds said to give her some pediasure.....that should help too.....we have TONS of high calorie recipies for so many things, but my guess is you'd probably be best talking to the Dr/ nutritionist before going that route- if you really want some of them let me know through email and I can send them to you. We also did Carnation Instant Breakfast in Sam's milk- the vanilla kind.......THat helped a lot I think because he was such a good milk drinker once he was a toddler.....its a little easier now that he accepts food and is past the allergy phase- I load up on the PB now, Maeve is still a little young for that I'd guess....hmmmm, avacado mushed up would be good, and they always told me to add butter to everything (I know too be that lucky right!?:))

Oh I don't know how bad the gagging and chewing issues are, but if they get bad, or don't get better(she is still young, but still) you might want to mention it to the Dr and get a Speech eval....Some kids just need a little extra help in the chewing department.....Sam came a long way with that help.........I don't really know- Maeve may not be anywhere near those kind of issues, but just a thought if it doesn't get better.....

my baby loves cream cheese on everything.

I add baby oatmeal cereal to whole milk yogurt every morning. Not only does it add calories and is fortified with good stuffs, it makes the yogurt thick so it sticks to the spoon so she can practice feeding herself.
